Longfellow/Seward Healthy Seniors is looking for office space in the greater Longfellow community. Their office was located in the U.S. Bank and was destroyed during the civil unrest. They need 400-500 sq ft (depending on how the space is configured and storage options) with space for four staff and a small meeting area. The space needs to be handicap accessible and close to public transit, preferably with off street parking. If you have space available in a commercial building, community center or church, please contact Mary Albrecht at 612-209-2540 or maryalbrecht@LShealthyseniors.org.
The Longfellow Community Council (LCC) is facilitating a neighborhood planning process for the reconstruction of the areas most affected by this summer’s social justice demonstrations. The goal is to create a new vision for equitable, sustainable and resilient redevelopment, enhancing public spaces, preserving key community assets and rebuilding civic, commercial and residential places for the coming years. The City of Minneapolis Council’s Public Health & Safety Committee & Office of Violence Prevention has approved an outline for expansive community engagement on how to improve our public safety system in Minneapolis. Under the proposed plan, community members citywide will have opportunities to offer feedback on alternatives to policing and police responses, public health-oriented violence prevention, and law enforcement reforms and/or changes to protocols and practices. You can watch the entirety of this committee hearing online here or read more here.
The Office of Violence Prevention is also developing a new initiative modeled after successful efforts in other cities that deploys violence interrupters into neighborhoods, wearing bright orange “MinneapolUS” t-shirts. The model complements existing outreach organizations already on our streets, employing a specific approach built on the idea that violence is a public health issue. By identifying and interrupting conflicts and working to promote community healing, the initiative is intended to break the “contagious” aspects of violence such as retaliation.
